The composer sought a text to describe the special character "of all that sing". After using the internet for researching various poets, this text was compiled from two poems by Oliver Wendell Holmes. As a medical doctor on the faculty of Harvard University, Holmes was also a prolific poet. His more famous son, Oliver Wendell Holmes, Jr., was also a poet and a Justice of the United States Supreme Court. This beautiful music and text pays homage to singers everywhere and laments, "Alas for those that never sing, But die with all their music in them!" Another powerful phrase exclaims, "Weep for the voiceless who have known the cross without the crown of glory!" Your singers will absolutely love singing this elegant description of their art! |
