Feast Of Lights, The |

As an undergraduate student at the University of Redlands (CA), Brad Nelson sang in the school's annual Christmas presentation of "The Feast Of Lights". This annual, decades-old tradition portrays a world lost in darkness until Christ comes to spread light, truth, and illumination. Years later, Brad wrote this hour-long cantata based on the structure that he recalled from student days. The musical selections and readings are based on texts which portray Christ as the light of the world. The presentation begins in darkness and gradually grows brighter as candles are lit, paralleling a growing ebullience in the music. A few years after its creation, Brad orchestrated the music while attending one of Robert Shaw's choral workshops in Princeton. (See a picture of the premiere of the orchestrated version) |
