With exhuberant vocal lines alternating between homophony and simple polyphony, this piece has the feel of a madrigal.
A contrapuntal fabric is shared between two voices while the other pair provides a recurring ostinato.
Free improvisation is encouraged by (optional) percussion players using handbells, glockenspiel, chimes, or vibraphone using only the "black" notes of the scale. This easily allows children to participate.
The effect is enhanced when the congregation is encircled by the percussion players.
