Horticultural beauty can be seen in the random, meandering growth patterns of holly and ivy.  Their hardiness prevails in the worst "blasts" of winter.  In this 16th century text, an anonymous poet portrays Hope throughout the seasons of life.  Musically, the composer depicts the meandering vines through the playful lines of accompaniment.  Beginning at m. 44, the piano's persistent ostinatos and climbing melodies portray the growing, yearning vine.  The music concludes in a joyous flurry of counterpoint and Hope!
